The Problem:Recent poles show a lack of Canadian youth votes in past elections. Our generation is the future of this country yet we don't even care who runs it?!
source: Human Resources and Social Development Canada
The Solution:
Appeal to youth in different ways, educate them in the political parties and what each one stands for. Make it more fun and interesting, speak in their language and use their forms of media to communicate.
Idea#1
The Political Tabloid
This is a magazine in the form of the oh-so-popular Hollywood tabloids. Get all the gossip on party leaders, everything from what they stand for to what they wear. And of course we want the dirt on them too! It's a splashy magazine with lots of paparazzi photos of our candidates, and clean type. Hello magazine does a nice job of this. Only they focus on the Royal Government in England instead.
Idea #2
T.V. Advertisements on the channels we watch! MTV, and Much Music ect. V-Jays on MTV can have discussions about up coming elections much like The View does in the US, but less cat fights......wait maybe that's a good thing.
Idea#3
TV spoofs and skits like the one on SNL were Sarah Palin and Hilary Clinton our poked fun at. This kind of humor speaks to our generation and will definitely get people talking.
Idea #4
Gorilla advertising
Get out into the streets and show people what it would mean to them if a new government went into power.
a) At college or university registrations; have inflated tuition fees posted. "This is what you would be paying if Mr. so and so was our prime minister" Make it hard hitting and personal. This will hit home because it directly affects us.
b) At skate parks; have signs up saying the park is now closed for new development projects approved by your government leader.
c) On the Sea Wall: have decals of photos dead animals on the pavement, posters of global warming. Who in our government is going to help us make a change.
Idea #5
Advertise in other media
a) Facebook; have a group set up where people can debate about candidates. Make it cool, not boring or corporate looking.
b) Radio; stations like TheBeat and Z-95 Crave, should have ads for candidates and short discussions about campaigns.
Idea #6
Make all the advertising way cooler. (I think that's a word) place ads in popular magazines and post posters in washrooms of night clubs and restaurants. Exposure is everything! If the ad is interesting enough it could get viral!
The Americans are famous for exploiting presidential candidates and at least it gets the word out there. Why are we, Canadians so "politically correct" and polite all the time? I'm not saying we should be more like the Americans, look what kind of a stinker they're in now. But if we want to get youth to get out and vote, we are going to have to make it a little more exciting.
