Aeshetic and style of illustration

The illustration would look something like this but with minimal colour. Certain objects would be coloured orange to intensify this.

A scanner Darkly

possible Orange logo?

An idea for a logo would be something like the Kidrobot. It already looks like an orange ;)

Merchandise!!

Research on how to carry an orange:
my sketches: these cases would have limited edition graphics on them. Collaborations with different artists like Jon Burgerman.

Our Heroes!

Here is some of my inspiration for my heroes:

here are my heroes:

Jokester Boy is a bit of a prankster and loves to ease any tense situation with his slapstick humor. An orange slice in the mouth as a smile or simply juggling three oranges, hopping on one foot while he sings, are just a few of Jockester's tricks.

hall monitor guy is a stickler for rules, so if he sees anyone braking them you have to answer to his very powerful orange pepper spray. Don't be caught in the hall with out a hall pass during class.........or else.

Madame Citrus uses her orange peel whip to whip any bad guy into shape. Don't piss this Dominatrix off, cause she always wins.

Mafia Man has a very power full orange gun that shoots out orange seeds at speeds faster than a machine gun!

These characters could become toys for a campaign. There could be T-shirts ect. the possibilities are endless!!

Research on how the scenes play out

So the scene would be a video stream, then the user will be asked to make a decision as to how they will solve the problem. For example:

The scene is The Bully
A bully starts pushing a teen around, calling him names and starts to shove him into a locker.
How will you save the day?
a) get up the courage to fight back and sock him one
b) pull out your cell phone and call for back up
c) use an orange as pepper spray

The correct answer is C, but if the user chooses any of the others the scene will still play out. Only the out come wont be a successful one. ie) you get beat up.......sorry try again ;)

If you get it right an orange super hero will come out and save the day with the power of Orange! In this case it's hall monitor guy, and he squeezes power full orange juice into the eyes of the bully!

Orangeville-what does it look like

The Town of Orangeville will work something like the website for the new 90210 series. (which FYI I'm disgustingly hooked on)
Here's the site to get an idea of how you would navigate through our site.

Obviously ours would be so much better, but you get the idea. I like how you move through the streets to go to particular sites. Almost like you are there!

Once you select a "site" you want to go to, lets use Orangeville High as an example, you can select different scenarios to play out.

The school would look something like this:

Roll over one of the windows and a link pops up. There would be a link for each window directing you to different parts of the school.

click on this link and it takes you to The Hallway scenario.

Here are some characters for this scene:
Bad Hair Day scene and The Bully scene
Roll over each character and a link pops up, click on link to play scene.

Get the glass

Cool animation, maybe this is an option.

research on mood and style approach

Orange Saves the Day

So Tony and I are running with the idea that Orange can be a supper hero. We want to show case the Orange in different scenarios and have "real" teens using an orange to save their day. This way teens can relate to these characters better than a superhero like "Orange-man". We want to speak to them as though we are their friends, not a parent or cheesy "hero".
The idea is we will create an interactive environment that is fun and will position orange as the coolest fruit out there.
Everything takes place in a small town....(could be your town)...Orangeville. The user will be able to navigate through this town and go to different buildings/sites. Each site will have a number of scenarios or stories, the user gets to choose how to use an orange to save them self from the situation.

The Adventures of Orange Hero

This is a sort of "choose your own adventure" style website. The narrative would take teens through a journey were Orange Hero fights off the evil Candyman and his crew of fat, lazy, high blood-pressure-Junkies. This all takes place in an imaginary world of Orangeville.

Orange hero (insert better name later) is a cool guy or girl that uses the power of orange to fight evil.

Orange Hero has a crew to help out, he chooses "healthy" teens that live an active life style to help him in his quest to save us from the over weight and un-healthy Candyman. The user will be asked to make a choice at certain points in the site. So they are in control of the outcome.

Orange Hero will be able to gain strength by picking up "orange potions". These are Vitamin-C power boosts. And when he/she fights the enemy, their blood sugar levels will go down. Think of Street Fighter, when at the bottom of the screen you can see the "life lines" going up and down when fighting.

The over-all aesthetic of the site can't be too childish looking. I don't want this to feel like a comic book or cartoon. More of a SinCity feel. Dirty, grimmy city with only one hope....Orange Man...or Hero....what ever.

Idea #2 Orange Face Contest

This would be a contest for teens to upload their funny pictures of video of themselves using oranges to make faces. For example you could use an orange slice in your teeth to make a smile. Or use them as eyeballs, the point is let's see who can be the most creative and funniest with there orange. Show a lighter side to oranges and teach kids....with out teaching them....that oranges are way funnier than any fancy chocolate bar out there!

Teens could share their photos and comments with friends on site, also vote for the best one! The winner could be featured in an upcoming ad campaign for oranges.

Project "Cool Orange" idea #1

1) My Pet Orange

This is a social network site for Teens to have fun, create and share with friends their own creations. Kids will be able to choose a "breed" of orange, like Japanese, Mandarin, Florida ect.
Each breed will have a back story explaining the characteristics of that particular type of orange. Then teens can customize their pet with all the accessories they can handle. Things like personalized dog tags, and studded collars. Kids will have to feed their pet a choice of healthy snacks or candy, and take their pet on walks. Their pets health and appearance will change when too much candy is given or not enough physical activity. Of course they will have to name their pet and register their pet in the social network of Pet Orange. This way they can share with friends how cool their orange is. Teens will also be able to choose a suitable habitat for their pet.
Some examples of characters are:

You could even package oranges in wrappers like candy bars with these "pets" in supermarkets. with a link to the site on the bottom of each orange.

Teenagers arn't what they used to be (I'm so out of touch)

So this little bloggie is to share what I've discovered about the tween/teen demographic. What are kids up to these days? An interesting study shows they spend a lot of time playing video games, more than what I expected!

The PEW research center recently released these results from a study done on Sept 19, 2008:

-97% of teens (12-17) play computer, web, portable, or console games
-74% played racing games (Nascar, Mario Kart)
-67% played action games
The most popular games are: Guitar Hero, Halo 3, Madden NFL, Solitaire...(really?!) oh and a game called Dance Dance Revolution.
For most Teens gaming is a social activity and plays a major component of their over all social experience. Whether that be with the opponent in the room or over the Internet.

So my conclusions based on these findings are:
-majority of teens play video games
-gaming is social and should be in a network inviroment to be succesful
-games to do with music, sports, or first person killing are most successful in this target market

Research-the Chinese Apple

The Orange originated in Southeast Asia, some languages call it the "Chinese apple".
There are many different varieties of oranges;
a) Persian Orange
This orange was brought to Italy in 15th century by the Portuguese and India traders. It's also called the "sweet orange", and is the most common variety cultivated today.
Interesting side note; this is what was planted a long trade routes to prevent scurvy......hmmm I can't help but think of pirates. hehehe
b)Naval Orange
A mutation in 1820 of an orchard in Brazil yielded this seedless variety. Where a twin orange grows on the base of another. See picture below
Because this is seedless there is no way to spawn new trees, so cutting and grafting is required. To this day we still use this technique.

c)Valencia Orange:
A sweet orange used for juice extraction. This is a late-season fruit, popular when Naval oranges are out of season.
side note: This was chosen as a Mascot in the 1982 FIFA World Cup in Spain. "Naranjito"

e) Blood Orange:
These have streaks of red in the fruit, thus given the name. The juice is dark Burgundy in colour.

Southern California was a huge producer of Valencia Oranges with a company you may have heard of....Sunkist. This possibly led to the name of "Orange County". Unfortunately the rising cost of property in the area during the 1990's moved most of the orange agriculture to Florida.

Brazil is still the top producer with 17.8 million tonnes of oranges. US is second with 8.4 million tonnes.

In Class Brainstorming + Initial Ideas

We didn't have enough time in class to finish, but here's a start.....

Project Cool Orange Design Brief

Alright so here it is, look out all you other fruits 'cause cool orange is in da house!! Woop Woop. (that was my pathetic attempt at being intimidating) But seriously Tony and I are going to rock this.

Youth Fall Short on Pollitical Knowledge

The Problem:
Recent poles show a lack of Canadian youth votes in past elections. Our generation is the future of this country yet we don't even care who runs it?!

source: Human Resources and Social Development Canada

The Solution:
Appeal to youth in different ways, educate them in the political parties and what each one stands for. Make it more fun and interesting, speak in their language and use their forms of media to communicate.

Idea#1
The Political Tabloid
This is a magazine in the form of the oh-so-popular Hollywood tabloids. Get all the gossip on party leaders, everything from what they stand for to what they wear. And of course we want the dirt on them too! It's a splashy magazine with lots of paparazzi photos of our candidates, and clean type. Hello magazine does a nice job of this. Only they focus on the Royal Government in England instead.

Idea #2
T.V. Advertisements on the channels we watch! MTV, and Much Music ect. V-Jays on MTV can have discussions about up coming elections much like The View does in the US, but less cat fights......wait maybe that's a good thing.

Idea#3
TV spoofs and skits like the one on SNL were Sarah Palin and Hilary Clinton our poked fun at. This kind of humor speaks to our generation and will definitely get people talking.

Idea #4
Gorilla advertising
Get out into the streets and show people what it would mean to them if a new government went into power.
a) At college or university registrations; have inflated tuition fees posted. "This is what you would be paying if Mr. so and so was our prime minister" Make it hard hitting and personal. This will hit home because it directly affects us.
b) At skate parks; have signs up saying the park is now closed for new development projects approved by your government leader.
c) On the Sea Wall: have decals of photos dead animals on the pavement, posters of global warming. Who in our government is going to help us make a change.

Idea #5
Advertise in other media
a) Facebook; have a group set up where people can debate about candidates. Make it cool, not boring or corporate looking.
b) Radio; stations like TheBeat and Z-95 Crave, should have ads for candidates and short discussions about campaigns.

Idea #6
Make all the advertising way cooler. (I think that's a word) place ads in popular magazines and post posters in washrooms of night clubs and restaurants. Exposure is everything! If the ad is interesting enough it could get viral!

The Americans are famous for exploiting presidential candidates and at least it gets the word out there. Why are we, Canadians so "politically correct" and polite all the time? I'm not saying we should be more like the Americans, look what kind of a stinker they're in now. But if we want to get youth to get out and vote, we are going to have to make it a little more exciting.

Apple Picker Machine Maniac!

Idea #1
The Apple Sucker
This machine is an animal when it comes to apple picking. His hoover-like suction is like non other. The key here is to have an accordion hose that cushions the apples as they pass through, and gently places them into a basket. The soft cone on the picking side is pliable enough to grab an apple but soft so they wont bruise.

Idea #2
The Wind Maker
So this machine is a very large and powerful fan that blows the apples off the tree. These apples are caught in a concave net/cushion that gently places apples into baskets.

Idea#3
Robo-bug
These machine-bugs are highly intelligent critters that climb up any apple tree and seek out healthy ripe apples with their sensors. They have a scissor like "nose" that clips the steam of an apple off the tree. There could be a number of these tiny robots on a farm, for fast apple picking.

Idea #4
Appleoctopus
This machine has many arms to pick apples off trees. At the end of the arm is a farmers glove, to mimic the hand of a farmer and not bruise the precious apples. These pickers also place the apples into baskets to be taken away to markets for consumers.

Idea#5
Apple Shakers
Small but strong robots shake the base of an apple tree, to shake out the apples. A net of some kind shaped in the shape of a bowl catches these apples. This is a quick and fast way to get lots of apples from a tree.
